The grown-up children came home for Easter. The ten o-clock mass at Our Lady was packed. The old guys who duck out for a cigarette during the collection always sit in the back three pews. They came in with ten seconds to spare and sat down in their pews which were already full. Father Emil allowed three high school kids to sing "Jesus is my special friend" accompanied by two guitars. Sister Arvanne had told them not to blow it. The lyrics left them as they sang. The guitar played a chord that made your teeth hurt. One of the boys giggled. The church was still as they climbed down with burning faces. Fr. Emil said, "God bless the message." Fr. Emil read the gospels loudly and fervently because he wanted to impart the Easter message. Hubert sat in the balcony with the volume control but he's deaf. Fr. Emil stepped forward a step too far and fell of the platform. He got up like an old fighter. Duane Bunsen took his new girl friend to the Lutheran Church. Denise is 17 and from Duluth. It was like an exchange of diplomatic visits. Everyone looked her over and talked in code. Arlene and Barbara Ann were in the kitchen trying to make Denise comfortable. The conversation at he table was very strained. Denise told them about "The Thornbirds". They will remember it as a joke. Fr. Emil tells Dorothy about falling off the altar.
Garrison talks about his trip to San Francisco.
