Karin Inqvuist came home for Christmas to spend a week with her parents, Virginia and Yalmer. She brought back two gifts and 132 critical essays from her students. Everything was like it always had been. A great many exiles went to midnight mass at Our Lady. Fr. Emil roused himself from his sickbed where he is dying of cancer. The lapsed Catholics with unbaptized children got a homily that they didn't expect. "Shame on you to receive a great treasure in your youth and throw it away to lie down with swine." They looked at their wingtip shoes. Larry Sorensen, the sad boy, came home. He got drunk, walked into the Christmas tree and apologized from then on. Sinners are supposed to get on the building committee. Eddy, the proud boy, is into grain: futures. He came back in a 1986 Ferlinghetti sports car and a girlfriend to match. The relatives asked where he kept his tools. He left as soon as he could. Richard, the jealous boy, is back with his beautiful wife, Eunice. She left LW because Richard couldn't bear other men to admire her. She made herself unattractive to avoid his rages. Karin got busy baking with her mother and forgot to grade the essays. The smell brought back memories of all of her aunts. She finally got around to grading the essays. The wonderful thing about Christmas is that it's compulsory. The radio program from Brother Carl who told him of the end of the world. Karin went for a walk with Rick the TV dog. Rick pooped out and Yalmer had to carry him home. The microwave oven incinerated their turkey dinner so they visited David and Virginia, who had been having a fight. The great gift of Christmas is the guests.
Garrison believes being 44 years old is not as old as it seemed when he was a kid! Garrison announces his first wedding anniversary next week. His gift to his wife is a Broadway Musical he has written. I a bilingual story of an American boy and a Danish girl.
